Register … or Rebel: How Many New Yorkers Will Defy New Law?
Already, signs that Governor Cuomo and his allies underestimated the pushback.
Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin has released documentation showing rejected Democratic proposals for the NY SAFE Act. They included these:
- Confiscation of all firearms arbitrarily redefined as “assault weapons”
- Labeling semi-automatic shotguns as “assault weapons” if they can hold more than five rounds or have a pistol-grip stock
- Confiscation of 10-round magazines
- Limiting the number of rounds in a magazine to five; magazines of greater capacity to be confiscated
- Limiting number of magazines in possession to two
- Mandatory microstamping of all guns in NY state
- Statewide database of all guns
- Limiting guns purchases to one per month
- Allowing a pistol permit database to be released to the public
- Relicensing of all pistol permit owners
- Renewal of all pistol permits every five years
There were more.
Assemblyman McLaughlin explained the intent of his Democrat colleagues in Albany on his campaign site:
Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin (R, C, I-Melrose) today revealed a 15-point anti-Second Amendment wish list that Democrats lobbied to be included in the final New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (NY SAFE) Act. McLaughlin called the list the “second phase” of a gun-grab agenda targeting responsible firearm owners that downstate politicians have been supporting for years.
“First the new gun-control bill made criminals out of law-abiding New Yorkers. And the radical, anti-Second Amendment proposals outlined in this wish list suggest the second phase of the plan: confiscation,” said McLaughlin. “When downstate politicians criminalize responsible gun ownership, they only empower criminals.”
The rejected proposals seem to mirror — at least in part — the desires of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who had publicly entertained gun confiscation and forced buybacks.
The provisions of the NY SAFE Act that did become law still demand far more of New Yorkers than many gun owners are willing to comply with. For example, one of the requirements of the law is that all newly classified “assault weapons” must be registered with the New York State Police by April 15, 2014. Many New York guns owners are intent on refusing to register their firearms:
Assault-rifle [sic] owners statewide are organizing a mass boycott of Gov. Cuomo’s new law mandating they register their weapons, daring officials to “come and take it away,” The Post has learned.
Gun-range owners and gun-rights advocates are encouraging hundreds of thousands of owners to defy the law, saying it’d be the largest act of civil disobedience in state history.
“I’ve heard from hundreds of people that they’re prepared to defy the law, and that number will be magnified by the thousands, by the tens of thousands, when the registration deadline comes,” said Brian Olesen, president of the American Shooters Supply, one of the largest gun dealers in the state.
Officials estimate at least 1 million semiautomatic rifles are owned in the state, sources said.
And come April 15, 2014 — when Cuomo is expected to be running for re-election — they all have to be registered with the State Police.
But because the rifles have been legal but unregistered until now, authorities don’t know who has them or where they are located.
State officials will be nervously watching the registration figures to see how many gun owners comply, sources said.
New York has estimated that there are one million firearms that fit their new definition of an “assault weapon,” and they are concerned that a large number of citizens will rip the teeth out of the law by simply refusing to register their arms. Perhaps hundreds of thousands of New York’s most law-abiding citizens are likely to make the choice to rebel against an unconstitutional law that violates their Second Amendment rights.
Perhaps of even more concern to Governor Cuomo and his anti-gun allies: this high level of resistance arose before Assemblyman McLaughlin released the list of confiscatory amendments Democrats had wanted to include in the NY SAFE Act.
NY Democrats have tipped their hand on their gun-control agenda, revealing to citizens that confiscatory disarmament of the civilian population is their goal, and that the “slippery slope” is no fable. They grossly miscalculated the public’s acceptance of their assault on the Second Amendment. What that means for the future in New York remains to be seen.

Revolutionary War Veterans Association Invites President Obama To Share His Respect For American Tradition Of Marksmanship At Appleseed shoot.
Ramseur, NY --(Ammoland.com)- To share in President Barack Obama’s admiration for the American tradition of shooting, the Revolutionary War Veterans Association (RWVA) is honored to invite him to share in American heritage and marksmanship at an Appleseed Project event during the weekend of April 20-21 at the RWVA home range in Ramseur, North Carolina.
U.S. President Barack Obama recently confirmed his admiration for the American tradition of sport sporting, and partakes in “skeet shooting all the time,” at the presidential retreat in Camp David, as recorded in a UK Telegraph article by Jon Swaine.
Project Appleseed is an activity of The Revolutionary War Veterans Association, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, dedicated to teaching every American our shared heritage and history as well as traditional rifle marksmanship skills.
Our volunteer instructors travel across the country teaching those who attend about the difficult choices, the heroic actions, and the sacrifices that the Founders made on behalf of modern Americans, all of whom are their “progeny.”
Our heritage program vividly portrays the Battles of Lexington and Concord with the kind of care and immediacy that is absent from most formal schooling. Modern listeners are confronted with the danger, the fear, and the heartbreaking separations that arose out of the choices made on April 19th, 1775. They are also reminded of the marksmanship skills and masterful organization that ultimately helped set the colonists on the path to success. Those who attend gain a better understanding of the fundamental choices faced by our ancestors as they began to set the stage for the nation we now enjoy.
The RWVA is a CMP affiliated organization, and participation in one of their two-day clinics satisfies 1/3 of the requirements for having an M1 Garand sent directly to your door at half the retail cost!
Pre-registration cost: $80 per weekend. One day events and other special events may differ. Reduced rates are offered for women, under 18, Active Duty Military, Law Enforcement Officers, Elected Officials, and Revolutionary War Re-enactors. All prices subject to change. Further information, including directions, start times and what to bring can be found on their website: http://www.appleseedinfo.org. Rifles and ammunition are not supplied.
Appleseed is a project of the Revolutionary War Veterans Association (RWVA), a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. Founded in 2006, RWVA is a 100% volunteer organization committed to bringing the very best of traditional rifle marksmanship skills and the story of April 19th, 1775, to each and every American. To that end, they are conducting over 400 Appleseed events across the country, with an estimated 15,000 students this year alone. Visit: www.appleseedinfo.org
Wilton, Ny Republican Committee passes Pro- Second Amendment Resolution, Opposes School Board Proposal.
Upstate Conservative Coalition [upstateconservativecoalition@gmail.com]
“PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION Tuesday, January 22 ,2013.
The Town of Wilton Republican Committee announced today its unanimous adoption of a resolution opposing new gun restrictions:
“No new laws ought to be passed which further restrict the rights of law abiding New Yorkers to possess firearms. We endorse and uphold the 2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution: A well-regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”
The Committee is asking other Saratoga County GOP Town and City Committees, to join us in adopting it. More importantly, however, is it’s call for all New Yorkers, irrespective of party affiliation to join in protecting fundamental Constitutional rights. Town Chairman and County Vice-Chairman Scott Kingsley said, “Our right to keep and bear arms is a fundamental right that transcends party politics. I hope all New Yorkers will join us in defending it.”
Before the Recently passed legislation, New York State already has some of the toughest gun-control laws in the country. For example, New Yorkers can not possess a handgun without a permit, issued only after a thorough police and judicial investigation, which sometimes takes up to 6 months or more. No New Yorker with a felony conviction or a history of mental illness hospitalization may possess any firearm. And, no pistol permit issued in Upstate NY is valid in NYC. The Committee called for a renewed commitment by politicians, judges, and police to strictly enforce the laws that were already on the books.
The right to bear arms is set forth in the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution. It was authored by Thomas Jefferson, who insisted it be added to the draft of the constitution being considered as a condition of his support. In fact the American Revolution began when the British attempted to seize the arms stored by Patriots at Concord and Lexington. We ought not to support the seizure, even by attrition, of firearms today, 237 years later.
Chaiman Kingsley also also questioned why the Saratoga Springs Board of Education on why they would discuss what events should or should not go on at the Saratoga Springs City Center, a separate Government entity that the Board of Education has no management of, ”Mr Palumbo should stick to educating our children instead of trying to kill legal business activities that he personally disproves.of. ”. Speaking of educating of children: Our school district covers a geographically diverse area which includes urban, suburban, and rural populations where many weapons are legally and responsibly owned. Shouldn’t a well rounded education include how to react if they stumble across a weapon, handle one safely and be respectful of all firearms. (All activities of firearm professionals?) Trying to shelter our children form reality will only lead to a tragedy.”
For more information, Contact Scott Kingsley at 852-5132. Chairman Kingsley is a Wilton native and a 1991 graduate of Saratoga Springs High School.

What some liberals really think of gun owners
January 4, 2013 Rick Moran
I don’t think this is a widespread belief on the left – only among the kooky left who never seem to get the attention that kooky conservatives get.
Mark Green, former candidate for New York city mayor, equates gun owners with child molesters:
Former Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Mark Green appeared on MSNBC’s Hardball on Thursday where he advocated for the strictest of gun ownership laws. He said that there should be a registry where people can go to see if their neighbor is a gun owner, just as “Megan’s Law” allows for individuals to see if there is a convicted sex offender living in their neighborhood.
“If we have a Megan’s Law – because I think almost everyone might agree – that if you’re a convicted child molester, a neighbor might want to know that because they’re in your home, safe, but maybe they could hurt someone else,” Green said. “Same thing with guns.”
“There may be people who think the more concealed weapons, the better. Fine. Live in Texas or Florida,” Green added.
Fill-in host Michael Smerconish and Putnam County, New York, ExecutiveMaryellen Odell both took exception to Green’s statement. Smerconish made it clear that he was in no way equating lawful gun owners with convicted child molesters.
Yes – live in Texas or Florida where the crime rate is two thirds that of New York. Meanwhile, Green can wait for the police to respond if someone breaks into his home and starts gunning down his family. That’ll work. And before he gurgles his last breath, he can tell the police how proud he was that he’s so much better than the rubes in Texas and Florida because he refused to own a gun to defend himself or his family.
What a jerk.

Gun owners need to be heard in the media in advance of the worst legislative attacks in State history.
Trenton, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- Visit ANJRPC’s new Activism Center for Sample Letters to the Editor and clickable submission links to over 130 NJ Publications!
Invest five minutes today to defend freedom forever.
Within a few short weeks, the most extreme anti-gun legislation in New Jersey history could begin moving through the legislative committee process. Gun bans, psychological exams and home inspections for every gun owner, 5-round magazine limits that interfere with self-defense, ammunition regulation, and more. We all saw what happened in New York State, and ANJRPC is mounting the most aggressive grassroots campaign in its history in an effort to avoid a repeat of that travesty.
But while our grassroots work is unfolding, there is another campaign going on – in the media. Gun owners are being attacked relentlessly, being blamed for the acts of criminals and madmen, and the media is refusing to give the other side of the story. It’s a completely one-sided assault on our rights.
If we are to prevail in Trenton, that must end, and it must end NOW. Our message must be heard in the media by the general public, and frankly, it’s up to all of us to get the job done.
ANJRPC is requesting that every gun owner and sportsman in the state write at least one article or letter to the editor immediately – so that our message gets out into the public in a big way during the last week of January and the first week of February, in advance of legislative hearings. The voice of freedom must be heard, and it must be heard now.
ANJRPC has made the task painless – we’ve set up a new Activism Center on our website, with concise sample letters to the editor and clickable submission links to over 130 newspapers and publications in New Jersey!
All you need to do is find a sample letter that you like, copy and personalize it, add your name and town, and click on a publication link to submit it by email, and you’re done. If you want to do more – like creating your own letter or article, the website has guidelines and suggestions on how to write effective letters to the editor. You can use our publication links to email in your own letter. Or, you can send multiple letters to different publications.
There can be no question that gun owners are in the fight of their lives. ANJRPC is working aggressively on multiple fronts, and will spare no effort or expense in this fight, but ANJRPC’s ultimate resource and strength is its membership – you. Invest five minutes today getting our message out to the public, and you’ll be helping to defend freedom forever.
Important note: There will be additional action alerts and requests coming over the next few weeks. Please know that some of the most critical moments in the legislative process are yet to come, and our work is not yet done. When we sound the alarm in the upcoming weeks, please answer the call with all your strength and resolve, like freedom depends on it – because it does.
